“Men break their promises all the time.”

“I don’t.”

“No one need ever know. It can be our secret.” “I will know I’ve broken faith with Adelaide.”

“You’re not married yet,” Jane pleaded, watching him like a starving man eyeing a banquet. “As good as,” he retorted as he reached the door.

She ran to bar the way. “So you have made love with her!”

“As good as,” he repeated. “Now let me leave, my lady, and we’ll forget this ever happened.” She suddenly turned her back to him and, laying her head against the door, began to sob. “I might

as well be diseased—or dead!”

God save him, what a predicament! He wished Adelaide were here. A woman would surely know what to say to comfort Jane. “I’m sure there’s still cause for you to hope that—”

“Oh, you’re a fool!” she cried, pushing away from the door and facing him, her nose red and her eyes brimming with tears. “I know the truth, and so does every woman here. I’m going to grow old without ever having a husband or children. All I have to look forward to is taking care of my mother until God is pleased to take her and then it will be the convent for me until I die. Imagine having such a future spread before you—how would you like it? Wouldn’t you want to know love—passionate love—just once?”

“Lady Jane,” he said gently, for he did understand despair, “I had death in my future not so long ago. But I also had hope and so must you. You have friends here and—”

“Friends? You think the ladies here are my friends? They pretend to be to my face, but I know they laugh at me behind my back. Oh, what a silly creature! Oh, poor old Lady Jane!” She began to sob again, her breaths coming in great gasps, a drip of mucus dangling from her nose.

“My lady, please,” he implored. “Don’t cry. You do have friends here. Lady Adelaide—” “Will have you whenever she likes after you’re married,” Jane replied through her tears. “Beautiful

women get whatever they want. The rest of us have to take what we can get, and be grateful—but I can’ t get anyone!”

She wiped her nose with the long cuff of her gown and looked at him beseechingly. “I know you need money for your brother’s ransom.”

Sweet heaven! “My lady,” he said, trying not to sound angry or indignant, although he was both, “I hope you don’t expect me sell my body to save my brother.”

“Oh, no! Oh, merciful Mary!” she wailed. “I was only offering to help you if you would help me!” “I cannot. I will not.”

With an anguish sob, Jane wrenched open the door and fled the chamber. Armand took a moment to calm himself, but only a moment. He had no idea whose chamber this

was, but he was sure he didn’t want to be discovered here. He had enough to trouble him without that. As for Lady Jane, surely she wouldn’t want anyone else to know of this confrontation.
